Escalera’s father had forbidden him from becoming an artist because "you can find one under every stone" in Mexico and "they all live in poverty." This scene shows exactly what the senior Escalera was referring to; a family who is on the streets selling their wares struggling for their next meal. A common scene yet beautiful and humbling. A scene that Escalera grew up witnessing and one that he successfully avoided in his own life but felt worthy to pay tribute to.
