Mothers from the beginning of time have always called to their “Higher Power” for blessings upon their unborn children. In this painting, Mi Fe, My Faith, Escalera depicts an Aztec Indian mother performing a ritual, asking her god’s for that very thing…a healthy and radiant child. The smoke from the canister is believed to rise to the heavens and catch the attention of her higher being. The viewer only has to study the woman’s countenance to see the sincerity of her request and the love she has for her baby.
